Elyse Eriksson loves interactive presentations. She hates boring training. And to prove it, she asked her audience at Austin ASTD‘s January 2012 meeting to stand up and chant “I’m mad about boring training and I’m not going to take it any more!” just like in that famous movie.

Using Hollywood film scenes is one of her favorite ways to spice up technical training, she says. For example, to teach international import/export rules, which is her special area of expertise, she asked participants to classify James Bond spy gadgets using the US import categories they had just learned. She also brings props like hats and wigs so attendees can play roles in movie scenes using her adapted scripts that reinforce training content.

You Must Model What You Say

She says participants soon get over their natural shyness once they play several games, sing funny songs, or compete in quiz contests. She also believes in having fun herself while she conducts training. And to prove her point, she put on a two-foot high blond wig to become a “Dolly” character.

Her formula for inventing training activities she calls “F.L.I.P.” You start with the PURPOSE of your training, choose activities based on LEARNER’s needs that are INTERACTIVE and, most importantly, are FUN. In small groups, members were asked to invent a workshop activity that would reinforce OSHA safety procedures. One group described a game they called “Are You Smarter Than an OSHA Inspector” modeled on the TV show “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader.”

At the end, Erikisson summarized her talk on how to rescue boring technical training, i.e. “Technical Training 9-1-1″ with 7 takeaways.

Bjorn Billhardt, CEO, founded Enspire Learning Inc. in 2001 so he knows that instructional designers have been guilty of creating boring e-learning programs for a long time. Authors today still fail to use audio-visual features of multimedia-capable PCs, mobile smart phones, and Web 2.0 tools to create interactive personalized learning. In fact, he says its tough dealing with reactions of fellow airline passengers when he introduces himself as an e-learning developer because corporate online training has such a boring reputation. But, he and Enspire Learning have tried from the beginning to change that popular perception with engaging e-learning games and simulations.

Enspire Learning believes the recipe for successful online e-learning consists of three ingredients: Stories, Simulations, and Social Learning. Bjorn explained why these ingredients are effective to Austin ASTD members on November 19, 2010 and with his kind permission I recorded his talk so you may listen to it too.

Three Ingredients and 10 Lessons Learned

To summarize Bjorn’s presentation, successful blended learning developers should include:

Stories to increase a learner’s motivation and retention (11:00)

Use simulations to allow learning by “failing” in a safe environment

Integrate social contacts with fellow learners to put content into context

After ten years developing award-winning e-learning products, Inspire Learning’s success can be summarized in 10 valuable lessons learned (see approximate time in the presentation when discussed.)

Use visual (not narrative) humor to tell a story. (15:15)

Use real stories where possible, but don’t be afraid to make details up to fit. (17:48)

Create meaningful narratives and challenges – boring stories are worse than none at all. (21:15)

Simulations should give the learner a sense of control and choice. (30:00)

Forget about sequential instructional design. You can’t design a learning sequence in a simulation. (33:31)

Most learning occurs in the debrief (after the simulation.) (34:32)

Tie blended learning elements together, i.e. classroom, online lessons, testing, group activities, etc. (35:22)

Start with the end in mind, then worry about technology tools. (40:56)

Create coherent social learning experiences with shared learning moments and accomplishments. (43:50)

Don’t forget about having fun (as you develop e-learning); it shows whether you cared! (46:05)

Debby Kalk, Gregg Orr, and Lance Kinney, U. of Texas at Austin doctoral students, recently completed a literature survey of 148 journal articles (76 theoretical and 72 research) that reported on the use of blogs, wikis, virtual worlds, podcasts, and social networking in university teaching. They summarized their conclusions to an interested audience of ASTD Austin Chapter members.

Jane “Star” Fisher presented to the Austin ASTD ID SIG how adding interaction to training improves attention, retention, and overall learning impact. Despite their effectiveness, why do trainers not use games more often? Why do they persist in boring, death-by-powerpoint slide shows? How can trainers improve their teaching presentations? Star guided the ID SIG members through “Reverse Brainstorming” and “Envelopes” group activities that allowed us to discover our own answers to these questions.

At work, Star is known as the “Game Guru” and is an avid student of Dr. Thiagi, well known expert on making instruction fun with games. Star has over 15 years of experience designing training and 9 years delivering instructor-led courses. She has a Masters of Science in Instructional and Performance Technology. She also earned a CPLP from ASTD. This recording was made April 25, 2007 with permission.

ASTD Austin ID SIG Meeting of July 23, 2009.

Its been many months since I attended an ID SIG meeting but the topic drew me in so I drove downtown at rush hour.

It was well worth my time. Robin Brandenburg, Director of Momentum and Innovation at Six Red Marbles did not disappoint, giving a smooth, articulate presentation to about 15 assembled instructional designers. Robin used the slick new slide program called Prezi to good effect.

You can view her slides here at http://prezi.com/133317/

Robin summarized the steps in the process described by Karen Holtblatt, Jessamyn Burns Wendell, and Shelley Wood in their book The Contextual Design Methodology (2005) using her personal experience developing a lesson planning software product for a K-12 publisher. Her case study added real-life examples to what could have been a dry talk about concepts like users’ needs, affinity diagramming, personas, and paper prototyping. Her engaging stories were context for the concepts.

This unedited recording is about 1 hour 20 minutes long, but Robin’s presentation is only about 60 minutes. The last 20 minutes is group discussion about whether members want to connect online using Facebook or LinkedIn.

Norma, my life’s better half, has created many useful publications to help play therapists work with children, especially hyperactive ones. She’s sold thousands of her Directive Group Play Therapy: 60 Structured Games for the Treatment of ADHD, Low Self-Esteem, and Traumatized Children. I’ve helped her over the years with publication layouts and editing since English is her second language.

One of my promises is to redesign her web site playtherapygames.com with more video. For example, I used scrapblog.com and embedded the slide show on the home page. I would also like to try WordPress or Drupal as a CMS instead of separate HTML pages. Dreamweaver seems so old school now. Another reason to try WordPress would be the beautiful layout themes others have created and share for free.

Which brings me to the point of this entry. I have been looking for templates or themes that suggest play and children, but have yet to find a good one. Thanks in advance for links to any WordPress or Drupal layout designs you think might be inspirational.
